Late Eagles Goal Forces OT, Men's Soccer Ends in 1-1 Draw

Portland, Ore. | Warner Pacific hosted Northwest University on Friday afternoon as the second half of CCC play continued. The match ended at a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of play.

The first 45 minutes of play were dominated by the Knights, who kept the ball on their half of the field for the majority of the first half, firing a shot on goal just 50 seconds into the match, making it clear early that they came with one goal in mind; to get a W.

Warner Pacific forced Eagles Goalkeeper Alexander Thiehofe to make 3 saves within the first fifteen minutes of play, keeping up the intensity and attacking quick and hard. Just after Thiehofe made a remarkable save off of a bomb from Kingsley Armah, Knights Senior Franklin Cordon received a beautiful cross-ball from Enrique Leal, took one dribble, and booted the ball from 20-yards out, firing it just past the keeper. With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Knights were up 1-0.

The ball stayed between the boxes for most of the second half despite the Knights getting off some quick shots on Thiehofe as they continued to be aggressive towards the goal.

As it seemed the game was going to end in favor of the Knights, with just four-and-a-half minutes left in the match, the Knights fouled Elliot Misic 18-yards out. Misic set up for a free-kick against a big WPU 4-man wall, Misic was able to keep the ball low and on the turf, slipping it past the 4-man wall and ultimately Juan Inzunza. Despite a few last-minute efforts by the Knights, the match concluded regulation time with a 1-1 draw.

In the first of two overtimes, much like the last 45 minutes of regulation, the ball remained in the mid-field. The Knights slipped past the Eagles defense twice but were unable to capitalize. The second OT was a defensive battle, as both defenses played high and tight, keeping the ball outside of the box and concluding the match at 1-1.

Warner Pacific was able to fire off 25 shots as opposed to the Eagles 5. The Knights forced Thiehofe to make 12 saves on the night, a season high.

The Knights host the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College on Saturday, October 12 at 11:30am.
