Late Evergreen Goal Puts Geoducks Over Knights Men's Soccer 3-2

Portland, Ore. |The Warner Pacific University Knights hosted the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College on Saturday morning. WPU fell 3-2 in the match.

The Knights came out aggressive against the back line of the Geoducks, forcing them to tighten up their defense. In the 22nd minute, Enrique Leal slid a thru-ball between the Evergreen defenders and found the feet of Arturo Bahena who was able to slide the ball past Evergreen Goalkeeper Hunter Bowman to take the 1-0 lead with 20 minutes to go in the first half.

Just ten minutes later, Evergreen's Tino Pantaleon fired a cross-ball over the Knights defense to find the head of Joe DiCarlo to tie the match 1-1 heading into halftime.

The second half seemed to play in favor of the Geoducks as they attacked the Knights box on a multitude of occasions, forcing gasps out of the fans, creeping closer and closer to the line. In the 56th minute, they found their break as Pantaleon sent another beautiful cross-ball through the air and onto the head of Carter Stephens as Evergreen took the 2-1 lead.

Making some defensive adjustments, the Knights offense seemed to flow in unison as they began creeping up on the goal line of the Geoducks. In the 74th minute, Hunter Vancleave received the ball just 10-yards from the goal and orchestrated his way past the defender to find the corner of the net, tying the match at 2-2.

With five minutes remaining, it seemed the Knights would go to extra time for the second night in a row when Evergreen's Mitchell Balmer sent another cross-ball into the 10-yard box, this time finding the head of a streaking Maxton Hauser for the game winning goal.

Bahena's goal was his sixth of the season, leading the team.

The Knights will close out their home season next weekend as they host Carroll College on Friday, October 18th at 4:30pm.
