Forest Grove, Ore. | In game one of the Ken Schumann Classic on Friday afternoon, the Warner Pacific Knights (2-3) were edged out by Linfield Wildcats (3-1) 84-78 in Overtime.
Â
Samantha Morgan was one rebound shy of her first double-double of the season. Morgan led the Knights in both points and rebounds with 21 and 9. Gabby Bruno added 17 points on the night.
Â
The game started out slow for the Knights, who were outscored 24-13 after the first 10 minutes of play. WPU then dominated the second quarter, thanks to the help of Bruno and Morgan, who had 11 and 12 points, respectively, outscoring the Wildcats 26-12 and headed into the locker room with a 3-point lead.
Â
After the break, Warner came out with a fire, continuing to attack the Wildcat defense in the paint, and to eventually lead by ten at the end of 30 minutes of play. As it seemed the Knights were going to head to Portland with a win, the Wildcats clawed their way back, managing to take the two-point lead with 4 seconds left in the game.
Â
Coach Gregg called the timeout with 4 seconds left and advanced the ball. The team circled up and dialed in on Gregg and his trusty whiteboard, who drew up a play that lead to a buzzer-beating lay-up by
Payton Whitmore, taking the game into an extra 5-minute quarter.
Â
Samantha Morgan picked up a few quick fouls in OT and the Wildcats capitalized from the FT line. With 90-seconds left in OT1, a Whitmore 3 tied it at 76 but the Knight shooting got cold down the stretch and Linfield sealed the win at the Free-Throw line.
Â
The Knights will face the host of the Ken Schumann Classic, Pacific University, Saturday evening at 6pm.
