Knights Drop Conference Opener In Thrilling OT Contest

Caldwell, Idaho | Warner Pacific Women's Basketball lost a nail-biting overtime thriller to College of Idaho on Friday night as they opened up Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

With 9 seconds to play in regulation, Celeste Pantoja sunk a 24-footer to put the Knights up by 2 but C of I came back to tie the game at 65 with 2 seconds left. After a Knights timeout, and the advancing of the ball to their third of the court, Gabby Bruno put up a layup that spun and rimmed out with time expiring to send the game into overtime.

The Knights looked good in the first half, outscoring the Yotes 37-33 in the first 20 minutes of play, and heading into the locker room with a 4-point lead. Courtney Jackson led Warner Pac in scoring at half with 10 points, shooting 2 of 3 from the arc.

Coming out of the break, the Yotes went on a 7-0 run to take a 3-point lead, pressuring the Knights to clean-up their play and take care of the ball. At the end of the third, the game was tied at 51, hinting it would go down to the wire.

With six minutes to play in regulation, C of I led by 6 before Senior Forward Gennah Schoen went on a solo 4-0 run to bring WPU within 2 with 4 minutes to play. The two teams exchanged baskets for the last 3 minutes of the game to take it into extra time.

The extra period remained tight before the Knights' offensive play-caller Pantoja picked up her fifth personal foul with 2:40 to play. Kali Kruger brought the Knights within 1, but C of I was able to force a few key WPU turnovers to take the lead and seal the victory.

Celeste Pantoja led the Knights in scoring with 11 points, dishing out 4 assists. Kali Kruger and Courtney Jackson each scored 10 points.

The Knights move to 3-6 and 0-1 CCC as they head to La Grande, Oregon to face the No. 17 Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
