Portland, Ore. | In Friday night's CCC match-up,
Gabriella Bruno had herself a first quarter; scoring 15 of the teams 24 points in the first ten minutes of play. The Knights ultimately lost steam and fell to Eastern Oregon University 63-73 in the contest.
The Knights came out firing, taking a lead over the Mountaineers with the help of Bruno, who couldn't miss a shot. A little over half-way through the first quarter, Warner Pac had taken a 12-point lead over the Mounties and by the end of it, WPU led 24-15 behind Bruno's 15-points.
After Bruno had cooled off and EOU managed to collect themselves, the game began to level out. It seemed every time the Mounties inched close to taking the lead, Warner Pacific would respond. EOU came within one-point three different times in the second quarter, but the Knights held them off and closed out the half with a 2-point lead.
Eastern Oregon started out the second half with a 15-2 run to take the lead from Warner Pacific. Of the 15 Mountie Points, Jane Nelson had 10 of her own. At the end of the third quarter, the Mounties had taken the lead and stretched it to eleven.
As the clock continued to inch closer to triple zeroes, the two teams fought back-and-forth. As it seemed EOU was pulling away, the Knights would fight back. WPU was able to cut the lead down to three with a
Courtney Jackson 23-footer but Warner Pac wasn't able to continue the momentum as the Mountaineers sunk a three-pointer that proved to be the dagger with just under two minutes left.
Perhaps the cause of the Knights' mishap was the fact that the Mounties more than doubled them on the boards, snagging 51 rebounds to WPU's 24. The Knights did, however, win the turnover battle; only managing to turn the ball over 14 times, whereas the Mounties gave it up 17 times.
Gabriella Bruno finished with 21 points, while
Courtney Jackson finished with a quiet 22-point game.
Mya Kirzy came off the bench and was a presence in the paint with seven boards,
Kali Kruger contributed five boards and two blocks.
The Knights will host the Yotes of College of Idaho on Saturday night, looking for revenge from an OT loss in Caldwell in December. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
