Portland, Ore. | In a game with 14 lead-changes, Warner Pacific Women's Basketball was able to hold off a late Coyote surge in a 78-75 victory over the College of Idaho on Saturday night.
Â
The Knights' victory is revenge for an overtime loss to the Yotes back in December. With the win, Warner Pacific looks to remain in fifth place with just four more regular season games remaining.
Â
From the start, it was clear the game would come down to the wire and knowing the history of these two teams, nothing else was expected. The largest lead of the game was the nine-point lead the Knights held with just under two minutes remaining. With too many whistles to count, there were a combined 52 free –throws attempted.
Â
The Yotes shot the ball extremely well, especially from deep, shooting 54.2% behind Sophia Jackson's 6 23-footers. The Knights, however, were able to convert from the stripe, shooting 22-32.
Â
For the first thirty minutes of play, there was no more than a six-point lead by either team. When the fourth quarter rolled around, you could feel the tension in the room begin to rise as people were on the edge of their seats, eager to find out who would get the last possession.
Â
It seemed with 1:47 to play that the Knights would walk away with an easier win than anticipated, but the Yotes stormed in with a three-pointed from Freshman Lexi Mitchell to cut the lead to six. After an advancement, Warner Pac committed a crucial turnover with 46-seconds to play that led to another Yote three-pointer, leaving the game to one possession with thirty seconds to play. With each team being in the bonus, it was up to the Knights to win the game from the stripe.
Â
WPU Freshman
Anna Farner, who led all players in rebounds with nine, was sent to the line to make it a two possession game. Farner hit one of two. After a Yote timeout and advancement, the Knights allowed them in the paint for two quick ones.
Payton Whitmore was then sent to the line with a two-point lead with 13 seconds left; the Senior was 1 for 2. Ultimately, the Yotes couldn't find space to launch a three off and were forced to take a mid-range jumper and the Knights ran off the court exuberant after the buzzer.
