Knights Hitting Sends Them Sailing over Pioneers

Portland, Ore. | Warner Pacific walked off the diamond with two more wins over NCAA Division III Lewis & Clark College under their belt, moving the Knights to 3-1 to start out the 2020 campaign.

The first game of the double-header was a close one between the Pioneers and Knights. The Pios got on the board in the first inning but it wasn't long before Warner Pac responded. Junior catcher Katie Gleasman came out swinging, sending a ball right over the centerfield fence and bringing in Devinne Amesquita to take a 2-1 lead. The next half inning, the Pios responded to tie it up.

The two teams exchanged runs throughout the first four innings with the score being tied at five leading up to the fifth inning. Lewis & Clark managed to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Once again, Amesquita had been walked, and Katie Gleaman steps to the plate. After fouling off one, Gleasman sees the ball she wants, takes advantage of it and punishes it over the left wall, once again brining in Amesquita. The Knights have tied it up at five.

As the last inning approaches, the first batter of the inning, Knights Sophomore Payton Hergert steps up. With a 2-2 count, Hergert makes contact, makes her follow through and sends the ball over the fence at left center. With the Pios unable to bring in a run in the bottom of the inning, Hergert's home run was in fact the game winner.

The Warner Pacific hitting found its way in game two as the Knights finished off the Pioneers 8-4. To start it off was none other than Devinne Amesquita, who had the first home run of the 2020 season on Saturday, placing the spot in nearly the exact same spot; 230 feet from the plate. Knights up 1-0. After a tying hit by the Pios, Makenzie Kimura steps up to bat. Kimura sends the ball perfectly down the left line for a double, bringing in two runners. The very next inning, the Knights scored four more runs and now lead 7-2 heading into the fifth. Lewis & Clark, refusing to go down with a fight, manage to get another two runs, making it 7-4.

After a sixth scoreless inning but absolutely dominant performance from the Knight offense, the Knights have one more chance on the ball. Determined to put an exclamation mark on the day, Emma Foster, the local Division Street recruit out of Franklin High School sends a ball high in the air for what seemed a life time, getting it to sail past the fence marking the final score 8-4.

"It feels great to get out on the field again and it was nice to get some wins to start off with and we'll continue to build off of them" said Coach Nathan Ohta about his team's performance this weekend. "We've got our home opener in a couple of days and are heading into that with some momentum and optimism. This squad is special and we couldn't be happier with where we are so far."

The Knights will open up home play on Wednesday February 12th at 6:30pm at Delta Park against Willamette University. To mark the historic moment, Warner Pacific University's President, Dr. Andrea Cook, will be throwing the first pitch at approximately 6:25.
