PORTLAND | The Warner Pacific University Women's Volleyball team (1-12, 1-9) fell back into the loss column Friday night with a four-set loss to fellow conference member Southern Oregon University Raiders, 13-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-25.
The Raiders took the first two sets behind a solid defensive performance from their front line, mainly due to the 10 blocks thrown down by middle blocker Carol Melo. Southern Oregon's height showed up big when need be, as the 13 total team blocks marks their highest of that stat count for the season. Outside hitter Hailey Van Well had 19 kills for the Raiders on 36 attempts, while libero Kadyn Jones tallied a game-high 17 digs.
Warner Pacific took set three with the leadership of the team's seniors, setter
Matalasi Laban, outside hitter
Grace Buchanan, and setter
Shania Rose, who all provided the spark needed for the Knights to outlast the Raiders and win their first home-set, 25-23.
In the end, the defensive prowess of the Raiders proved to be too daunting of a task for the Knights' young middle blockers and outside hitters to outlast, dropping the fourth set and the match in front of a decent 50-50 Warner Pacific/Southern Oregon split crowd.
Buchanan led the Knights offensively with 23 kills, and freshman libero
Sabah Mohammady wrangled in 16 digs on the night. Laban nearly had a double-double with 8 kills and 29 assists, while hitting a .316 kill percentage with her sneaky quick attacks off of potential set opportunities.
The Knights are back at it tomorrow night at 5pm PST, as they play host to the Oregon Tech Lady Owls in C.C. Perry Gym for their second game of the four-game home stand.
