Knights Squander First Half Lead, Fall to Arizona Christian on Buzzer Beating Three-Pointer

Glendale, Ariz. | After a dominating first half performance for the Warner Pacific University Women's Basketball team (0-1), the Knights were unable to secure the victory on the home court of the Arizona Christian University Firestorm (3-1), who roared back to take tonight's game on a buzzer beating three-point shot, resulting in a 59-62 loss for Warner Pacific.

After shooting lights out in the first quarter with a team field goal percentage of nearly 53%, then coming out on top of a competitive second quarter, head coach Matt Gregg and the Knights found themselves up 13 points at the half. While scoring 13 points off turnovers solely in the first quarter alone, Warner Pacific was able to find success pounding the ball into the paint with their guards making multiple driving layups.

However, a tale of two halves dictated tonight's outcome, as the Firestorm were able to quickly flip the script on the Knights' large double-digit lead by outscoring WPU by 11 points in the third quarter, making this a 12-point game with 10 minutes to play.

With the Knights able to fend off ACU for a majority of the 4th quarter, everything came crashing down in the final 11 seconds of game-time. After a made free throw by Knights senior guard Lynden Harry to put the Knights up by three points, senior point guard Labrea Denson fouled Firestorm guard Tee Waters to send her to the line to shoot two free throws with five seconds remaining.

After making the first free throw, the Knights were unable to box out ACU guard Alyssa Alvarez, who scooped up the missed shot and put it back to tie this game up at 59-59.

A quick timeout from Coach Gregg to advance the ball beyond midcourt gave the Knights four seconds to reclaim their lead. After the inbound pass, WPU senior guard Anna Farner was called for being out of bounds on the baseline, despite the play ending with her laying on the ground with an Arizona Christian defender on top of her.

Two seconds remaining was all that was needed following an ACU timeout to advance the ball much like the Knights did, as Alvarez sunk the buzzer beating three-point shot off the backboard to seal the Firestorm's comeback win.

Warner Pacific senior guard Courtney Jackson, who provided a game-high 16 points in the starting rotation for Coach Gregg, led the Knights offensively tonight on 50% shooting from the field. Junior transfer guard Peyton Slaga, who was playing in front of her home state family and friends, came off the bench to chip in a 12 point effort, adding 6 rebounds to the mix, all of which were offensive boards resulting in second-chance opportunities.

Firestorm forward Kaycee Brown tied Jackson with 16 points herself, while also nabbing 7 rebounds for ACU. Hitting the game-winning shot for ACU put Alvarez into double-digits with 10 points, which she would do on her only made three-point field goal of the evening.

Warner Pacific Women's Basketball is back in action tomorrow afternoon, as they wrap up their quick Arizona preseason trip with a battle against the Benedictine University at Mesa Redhawks, starting at 3pm Mountain Time.
