PORTLAND | In their first matchup in over 20 years, the Warner Pacific Men's Soccer team defeated NCAA DIII Pacific Lutheran University at Eastside Timbers Complex by a final score of 2-1. For a game that was physical and aggressive from the minute tonight's match began, it's a wonder how this contest didn't end with even more goals from either side.
Scoring for the Knights tonight were seniors
Hunter Leach and
Miguel Andalon-Ordaz, which both came via penalty kicks appointed during regulation time.
The Lutes got on the board first in the 29
th minute by sophomore midfielder Sammy Tafolla, who was assisted by forward Robby Guyer on a crossing pass from Tafolla's right.
Almost exactly 10 minutes later, Leach was given the opportunity to tie this game at 1-1 thanks to a penalty kick in PLU's box, which he managed to do on a put-back shot out of the reach from Lutes goalkeeper Nicholas Gaston.
Tonight's game winning goal goes to Andalon-Ordaz, who secured tonight's win on a PK of his own just 12 minutes into the second half. Miguel scored on his first shot of the 2021-22 season, and making him the fifth different Knight to score in this early season.
The Knights head back on the road this Sunday to face another NCAA DIII school, the Pacific University Boxers, in their last non-conference match of the season. That match is set to start at 12pm PST in Forest Grove, Ore.
