PORTLAND | A couple of back-to-back rough conference games on their home opening weekend for the Warner Pacific University Women's Volleyball team, as the Bushnell University Beacons swept the Knights tonight in straight sets, 13-25, 9-25, 15-25.
Earlier today, Warner Pacific University and its Athletics Department hosted numerous events throughout the day to remember our fallen heroes on the 20
th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. These events included hosting a basketball tournament for local firefighters in the Portland area, as well as the Women's Basketball team running 110 flights of stairs off the west side of C.C. Perry gymnasium.
Before tonight's match began, both the Knights and Beacons came together in unity to support our past and present heroes by wearing matching pregame shirts that were sponsored by the Portland Firefighters Association. After the playing of a memorial video to honor those lost twenty years ago today, Stew White, a 40+ year veteran who served as a member of the Portland Fire & Rescue and Honor Guard, sang today's national anthem in front of a patriotic crowd.
To cap off the honors from tonight, Warner Pacific Athletics announced that all of the proceeds from tonight's game would go to honoring those currently serving our great nation, and supporting the families who have lost those loved by many.
In tonight's match, nearly obtaining another double-double this season was senior outside hitter
Grace Buchanan, who accounted for 11 kills and 9 digs, while also notching a couple of service aces along the way. Sophomore setter
Jaliza Lazaro followed Buchanan defensively with 8 digs of her own and a block at the net.
The Beacons front court had a field day of their own when it came to blocks, accounting for 20 total team blocks against the Knights. Freshman outside hitter Sierra Jenkins racked up 7 block assists on the evening, while seniors Callie Wilkins and Camille Guerrero covered a majority of the back court action with 11 digs apiece.
This upcoming Tuesday night will more than likely bring Warner Pacific University's C.C. Perry Gym attendance count as close as possible to maximum capacity, as the Knight's conference rivals, the Multnomah University Lions, will travel to the 97215 in their first conference meeting of the year at 7pm PST. Multnomah came out on top in the friendly non-conference game they hosted just a few weeks ago, meaning the Knights will be hungry for a revenge win.
