PORTLAND | Led behind the offensive brilliance of senior forward
Arturo Bahena, the Warner Pacific University Men's Soccer team (5-1, 2-0) will end the opening weekend of conference play tied atop the standings after a 2-0 victory over The College of Idaho Yotes (3-1, 1-1).
Head Coach
Troy Ready was ecstatic about his team's shutout victories this weekend to begin conference games, and proceeded to explain, "Our team objective on the weekend was the set the tone for conference play. Back-to-back clean sheets in this conference are hard to come by, and I credit the entire group from front to back on such an incredible accomplishment."
"We will need to be more clinical in front of goal as the conference play weekends progress, but I'm proud of our players for how they handled themselves amidst several high-intensity situations," Coach Ready went on to say.
Bahena, who scored or assisted on all 3 of the Knights' goals this weekend, found the back of the net for the only two scores in today's contest, both of which he scored by demonstrating the speedy athleticism he brings to this experienced Knights' team.
In the 55
th minute, senior goalkeeper
Alexis Calderilla-Hurtado found Arturo up the middle on a rocket of a cross to the Yotes' defensive side of the field, where Bahena turned on the gas and outran the multiple defenders chasing him to pop the ball past the charging Yotes goalkeeper, Drew Morris, for an easy open goal look with his left.
As desperation time settled in for C of I, Bahena once again mustered some life in his cleats and found himself one-on-one with Morris after a cross from freshman midfielder
Luke Wagener. A couple of swift jukes gave him the opening he needed to ice this one for good.
Bahena and the Knights will be back in action next Friday, September 24
th at 11am PST when they play host to the visiting Walla Walla University Wolves, then the following evening against the Carroll College Saints on Saturday at 4:30pm PST.
