EUGENE, Ore.| The Knights became Cascade Collegiate Conference champions thanks to a trio of overtime goals on Friday.
In a rematch of last year's CCC Championship Finals Warner Pacific took on Oregon Tech on Friday, looking to cap off the season with some more hardware. The Knights undefeated regular season had already earned them the regular season championship. The Knights' matchup against the Owls gave them the opportunity to be crowned the conference tournament champions as well.
The Knights put pressure on the Owls early, attempting six shots in under the first 20 minutes of play.
One of those early shots nearly got the Knights on the board.
In the 10th minute,
Matias Castano let loose with a beautiful shot from just outside of the box and would've had a great top corner goal if not for an incredible leaping save.
The Owls responded with opportunities of their own, as three minutes later Oregon Tech missed just wide with header off a corner kick.
That sort of tightly contested play is why this game was held scoreless for nearly 100 minutes.
For the second straight year, the Knights and Oregon Tech went into overtime in the Conference Finals. This time, however, was under different rules as a golden goal in overtime wouldn't secure the championship.
With two minutes remaining in the first overtime period
Hunter Leach, who returned to the lineup today after serving a two-game red card, gave the game its first score as he finished off of a cross from Erik Mattice to put the Knights up 1-0.
With 12 minutes left to play, the NAIA's leading scorer, Andrew Martinez gave the Knights some breathing room and extended the lead to 2-0. Shortly after, the Owls earned a red card which sent
Matias Castano to take a penalty kick. Castano found the back of the net, bringing the game to its final tally of 3-0.
While the Knights enjoyed a late scoring surge, their defense held strong throughout. Goalkeeper
Alexis Calderilla made some huge saves for the Knights in the closing moments of the game, helping Warner Pacific to secure their first Conference Finals Championship since 2009.
The championship serves as a crowning jewel to a historic season as the Knights are now both CCC regular season and CCC tournament champions, holding an overall record of 18-0-2. Speaking on the significance of closing out the championship after such a historic season, Head Coach
Troy Ready said "It's a massive accomplishment. The team set out to win both conference and the conference tournament this year. So this does fulfill two of our goals this season."
Winning the tournament finals over Oregon Tech specifically, is also significant, as it avenges the tournament finals loss the Knights took at the hands of the Owls last season. Last year's championship game also went into overtime, where the Owl's would win 2-1.
"It makes it a bit more special" said Ready. "To have the #1 and #2 seeds competing for that trophy is always going to be a competitive match. But I was very impressed with how we played both in regulation and then also in overtime. Now we set our sights on the National Tournament."
By winning the regular season championship, the Knights automatically gained a birth into the NAIA National Tournament. The Knights are currently ranked 21
st in the NAIA. Warner Pacific will find out who they take on in the opening round of the NAIA Tournament on Monday morning at 10 a.m. Pacific when the announcement is made on the NAIA's YouTube channel. Â
