Martinez Scores Two Goals En Route to Knights Win Over Mountaineers

LA GRANDE, Ore.| In a game that was delayed by lightning, Warner Pacific came away with a 2-1 win over Eastern Oregon on Saturday.

While lightning may not strike the same place twice, Knights forward Andrew Martinez does. Martinez continued his stellar 2022 season by scoring two goals during Saturday's match.

Martinez wasted little time, scoring in just the third minute of the game to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. The game was back and forth from there, with the score remaining 1-0 at the end of the first half.

Martinez struck again in the 60th minute for his 12th goal in just seven games to make the score 2-0.

Eastern Oregon was able to get on the board in the 85th minute, but their rally came a little too late as they didn't attempt another shot for the rest of the game.

Warner's defense was strong throughout the game and goalkeeper Alexis Calderilla recorded four saves on the night.

The end of the game also saw some increased physicality, as all four yellow cards in the game were issued in the final 10 minutes.

The win was a feat of endurance for the Knights, as the lightning delay caused the game to go nearly three and a half hours.

With the win the Knights advance to a perfect 7-0 overall to open the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Knights are in action next on Sept. 23 on the road against Carroll College.
