PORTLAND, Ore.| Knights volleyball got their first win of the season in a thrilling matchup on Friday by beating Walla Walla in 4 sets, 21-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-19.
The first set was a back and forth affair that saw the lead change hands five times. With the set tied up at 17, the Wolves were able to take control and close out the set by a score of 25-21.
After dropping the first set, the Knights fought back and won their first set of the season.
Warner jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the second set. Walla Walla fought to make an 8-8 game, and from there the two teams battled to bring the game to 16-16. Warner went on a run and got out to a 20-16 lead before having the set tied up at 21. Some more tightly contested action brought the game to a 25-25 tie. From there, a kill by Tevlin Britton and a block by
Elizabeth Reid gave the Knights their first set victory of the year by a score of 27-25.
After dropping the second set and with the match now knotted at 1-1, the Wolves took control of the third set early on.
Walla Walla rode two extended scoring runs to a 20-11 lead. Â This, however, was just a pretext for a thrilling comeback set victory by the Knights.
Following the early deficit, the Knights showed great resiliency and clawed their way back into the game. Errors by Walla Walla and kills by
Shelby Martin,
Kaytlin Campbell, and
Elizabeth Reid helped the Knights to go on an 11-2 run and tie up the game at 22. Two kills by Walla Walla gave them the 24-22 lead in the set. With their backs against the wall, the Knights turned to Tevlin Britton who recorded four consecutive kills to give the Knights an incredible comeback victory in the set 26-24.
The final set saw the Knights hold their biggest lead of the afternoon. With the Knights down 6-4 they put up eight consecutive points to get a 12-6 lead. From there, Warner was able to keep Walla Walla at bay and win the set 25-19 for the Knights' first victory of the year.
The win marks the first of the year for the Knights and also the first at Warner Pacific for new volleyball coach
Kim Lissinna. "It was a great team win, a great team effort. They showed up in the game with what we've been seeing in practice every day." Lissinna said. "We kept telling them in the timeouts 'keep working and hard and good things will happen.' They finally proved it and now we've got a little bit of confidence moving forward."
The win featured many impressive performances.
Tevlin Britten was instrumental in the win, leading the team with 15 kills and recording 10 digs.
Elizabeth Reid recorded 13 kills and had a .290 hitting percentage. JuJu Williams led the team with 19 assists, and
Sabah Mohammady led the team with 21 digs.
The win puts the Knights at 1-7 on the season. Volleyball is in action again at home on Sept. 24 against Lewis-Clark State at 5 p.m.
