COLLEGE PLACE, Wash.| A late game surge helped Warner Pacific women's basketball complete a thrilling fourth quarter comeback to earn a victory over Walla Walla on Friday.
The Knights (3-23, 3-16) traveled to take on Walla Walla (5-19, 4-17) with hopes of ending the 2022-23 regular season on a high note.
The game was evenly matched to start. While the Knights held the lead for nearly the entirety of the first quarter, the Wolves were able to remain close and keep it a one possession game. By the end of the first quarter, the Knights were up by three.
The second quarter was filled with more back and forth action as the Knights and Wolves traded leads.
Amalya Sales and
Paityn Rhode led the Knights in scoring in the second quarter as the game went into halftime tied up at 27-27.
Walla Walla controlled the game coming out of halftime. The Wolves established a lead and extended it to as much as 13 as they opened the third quarter with a 15-2 run.
The Knights were able to tighten up as they held Walla Walla to just one point in the final five minutes of the third quarter, reducing the deficit to 6 going into the final quarter.
The Knights' momentum carried over from the end of the third quarter into the fourth as they were able to tie up the game with just over 6 minutes left in regulation. It wouldn't stop there for the Knights, however. Warner Pacific outscored Walla Walla 27-11 in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback win by a score of 64-54.
The Knights were led by
Paityn Rhode who scored 15 points, including 9 in the fourth quarter. Rhode went 5-7 from the field including a perfect 5-5 from deep.
McKeeley Tonkin also had a strong performance, scoring 14 points and recording 3 steals.
The win puts the Knights at 3-23 on the season. Warner Pacific women's basketball closes out the season tomorrow when they take on Lewis-Clark State.
