Knights Fall in Salem

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 24th, 2024

Salem, Ore.| The Knights played their second double header in as many days today against Willamette University and lost game one 9-3 and lost game two in dramatic fashion 6-5.

Game One
The Knights scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning when Kili Makanani slapped a double into left center scoring Briana Munoz who had got on base on a fielder's choice earlier in the frame. The very next batter was Nia Tate who hit a solid single into center field scoring Maddie Gamble who had got on base via base on balls. The final run of the game for the Knights was on a sharp double to left field by Lauren Amesquita scoring Nikki O'Reilly who pinch ran for Jovita Laloulu who drew a walk.

The Willamette offense was very strong today scoring 9 runs off of 10 hits. Their defense was solid as well not having any errors. The Knights unfortunately tallied up 5 errors in the game. Kili Makanani got the start on the bump today and she pitched decently going 5 innings allowing 5 runs in which only 4 of them were earned on 6 hits.

Game Two
The Knights were extremely competitive with the Knights making it into a great game that went down to the wire. The Knights started out hot earning 4 runs in the first inning. Briana Munoz started the scoring with a single through the left side of the infield scoring Lauren Amesquita who walked to start the inning. The second run was unearned when Maddie Gamble reached first because of a throwing error driving in a couple of runs. The final run of the inning was scored on a productive out from Jovita Laloulu who grounded out driving in Gamble.

The Knights didn't score again until the sixth inning. During that time, Willamette scored 5 runs to take a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning. The Knights fought back and tied the game up in the sixth when Nikki O'Reilly singled through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded moving everyone up one station including Maddie Gamble moving from third to home.

Unfortunately, the Knights couldn't hold Willamette in the bottom of the seventh inning. Willamette drove home the winning run in walk off fashion handing the Knights their sixth loss of the season in as many games.
