FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 17

Vancouver, B.C.| Warner Pacific Knights Softball played their first two games in a series against the University of British Columbia up in Canada and lost both games by final scores of 3-0 and 9-1.
Game One
The Knights in the first game of the day played very inspiring softball defensively against a great UBC team who is currently receiving votes in the latest Top 25 Poll. The University of British Columbia did all the scoring in this one starting in the third inning when Tegan Harnett singled to left field bringing home a run. Zoe Willington earned an RBI on a fielder's choice in the fifth. The final run of the game was scored by Brielle Donoghue after Jessica Heutink doubled to right field.
The Knights in this one were only able to collect two hits off the bats of
Ryleah Torres and
Giselle Beriault. The team didn't have the best approaches at the plate, not drawing a single walk and striking out 12 times.
Kili Makanani got the start in the circle and went three and a third innings giving up just an earned run walking six and striking out three Thunderbird batters.
Alex Brooks came on in relief and pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up just three hits but they all turned out to be costly giving up two runs. It is worth noting that both the runs given up by Brooks were unearned and will not count against her seasons ERA. Carleen Murray was in the circle for the Thunderbirds and like she has many times in the past, shoved against the Knights going the distance and just allowing the two hits by Knights hitters and striking out 12. Even though the Knights offense didn't get going in this one, losing 3-0 against a great squad like UBC is an important result for the continued growing confidence of this team and program.
Game Two
The Knights in the second game in Canada didn't fair as well as they did in game one defensively but offensively was able to get more hits and pushed across a run. The Knights were able to slam out eight hits in this one but couldn't push more than a run across the plate. The Thunderbirds were able to push across their nine runs on just seven hits. The Knights one run was scored early in the second inning on an
Ashley Fritz single up the middle, bringing home
Giselle Beriault from third base. Torres, Beriault, and
Ashley Fritz led the way for the Knights, finishing with two hits.
Skylar Groesbeck and
Kasey Wallace eeach checked in with hits of their own.
Tegan Harnett and Zoe Willington led the way for the Thunderbirds, finishing with two hits. Marin Jorgenson and Clare VanSpall each earned two RBIs.
Kaylee Pokorny got the ball for the Knights and didn't have her best stuff going just 1.1 innings giving up just two hits but six runs. It is worth noting once again that out of those six runs, only two of them were earned. Pokorny walked three Thunderbird batters and didn't record a strikeout.
Nia Tate came on in relief and pitched 2.2 innings giving up five hits, three runs, and walked a batter. Only two of those three runs were given up by Pokorny. Brynn Fortier got the start for UBC giving up just five hits and two runs both earned.
