Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Clinging to a two point lead,
Michael Hall came up with a big block in the final seconds for Warner Pacific to preserve a 69-67 win over Concordia tonight at
Bart Valentine Court.
The dramatic finish was set up at the free throw line, as WP's
Sean Gaines made one of two with six seconds remaining which gave the Knights the slim two point advantage. On the ensuing inbounds, CU's Tyler Velasquez took the ball the length of the floor and seemed to have a clear path to the rim, but Hall swatted the ball away cleanly on the layup attempt giving Warner Pacific their first CCC win of the year.
The game was close and hard fought throughout, but Concordia did impose their will for a stretch the first period. Willy Ligon drained a three pointer at the 3:43 mark of the half, giving the visiting Cavaliers (8-6, 0-3 CCC) their largest lead of the game (35-25) which capped a 12-2 run.
Warner Pacific (6-8, 1-2 CCC) headed to the locker room with high-fives all around however, as Hall canned a 12 foot jump shot at the buzzer to cut the CU lead down to six points (39-33).
The second half was a battle, though Concordia held tight to a single digit advantage for the bulk of the 20 minutes. WPC hung around and took their first lead of the second half (64-63) with 2:24 left to play on a
Doug Thomas three point field goal. The Cavs regained the lead briefly thanks to Ligon's third make from behind the arc, but the Knights held CU to a single free throw the rest of the way.
Thomas ranged inside and out on his way to a game high 26 points for Warner Pacific. Hall added 12 points, and completed the double-double with 13 rebounds. The Knights won the team rebounding battle 45-40.
CU was led by 19 points from Ligon, and 17 points and nine assists from Velasquez.
COMING UP: Warner Pacific will take a short break for Christmas, and then host Vancouver Island in a non-conference game on Decmeber 30. Note the start time is 1:00 pm. Â
