Warner Pacific Survives Corban Upset Bid

PORTLAND, Ore. – Top seeded Warner Pacific held off a strong challenge from eight seeded Corban, and advanced to the Cascade Conference Tournament semifinals with a 65-60 decision tonight at Bart Valentine Court.

The visiting Warriors came in a with a solid game plan, and built a six point advantage in the first five minutes. Dustin Moore and Josiah Sebens each drained three pointers to give Corban an early 8-2 lead. WPC found their footing and fought back to take a 23-18 lead on a Jeremy Jones jump shot with 5:40 left in the first half. Corban responded with an 8-0 run to reclaim the lead at 26-23 thanks to two more makes from behind the arc by Sebens.

The host Knights went on a 11-2 run over the last four minutes of the period however, and headed to the locker room with a six point advantage, 34-28.

The second period was a battle, as the Knights simply could not shake the resilient Warriors. Jones gave Warner Pacific a six point lead (44-38) with a score in the paint with 12:08 on the clock, but Corban found enough holes in the Knight zone to cut the margin to a single point on three occasions.

Again the Knights surged ahead, this time with a 9-2 burst capped by a trey from Marcus Moore which gave WP a 57-49 lead with 5:03 to play. Corban did not fold and made one last charge, eventually tying the game at 59-59 after a finish at the rim by Kent Foster with 1:24 remaining.

WP's Stephen Harris drew a foul on the next possession, and the senior sank both free throws to give the Knights the lead for good. The Knights made 6 of 6 attempts from the foul line in the final minute, while holding the Warriors to a single free throw.

Josiah Sebens led Corban with 17 points, including four makes from three point range. Marcus Butler added 16 points on 8 of 11 shooting from the field.

Warner Pacific was led by reigning NAIA Division II Player of the Week Stephen Harris with a game-high 18 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and a career high six blocked shots. Jeremy Jones and Marcus Moore came off the Knights' bench to provide 14 and nine points, respectively, while the Knight bench combined to score 37 points in the win.

The Knights' win-loss record improved to 25-6, and they will host Northwest University in a CCC Tournament semifinal game on Saturday, February 23. Corban's season ends with a 9-19 record.
