Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific secured the #4 seed for the CCC Tournament and a 1st round home game with a 83-80 overtime win over Oregon Tech at
Bart Valentine Court tonight.
With the Cascade Conference regular season in the books, the Knights (16-14, 10-8 CCC) will host #5 seed Northwest University in a quarterfinal matchup, while #7 seed OIT (16-14, 9-9 CCC) will travel back to Portland to face #2 seed Concordia.
Both teams opened the game by finding the range from outside.
Doug Thomas made a trio of three pointers for WPC before the game was four minutes old, but OIT's Austen Flint was just as hot and answered with three makes from behind the arc within five minutes of play.
After Brandon Bautista hit from distance at the 10:56 mark, Oregon Tech enjoyed a six point advantage, but the Knights responded with an 8-2 run that tied the game at 29-29. The teams traded baskets for the next few minutes, but Warner Pacific closed the half with a 5-0 burst that sent them into the locker room ahead 42-37.
The second period was classic basketball with several momentum swings, the first of which was a 7-0 run capped by a
Sean Gaines layup that gave WP their largest lead of the game at 52-40 with 16:41 to play. A quick timeout by OIT stopped the bleeding, and allowed the Owls to regroup and rally. The visitors outscored WPC 19-4 over the next six minutes, and Kyle Waits hit a three pointer that gave Oregon Tech for the first time in the period at 59-56.
The Knights fought back and not only regained the lead but built a five point spread with 2:42 on the clock after Thomas made a fade away jump shot. OIT rallied again behind the play of Duncan Schramm, who was a thorn in WP's side all game. Schramm scored a pair of baskets around two free throws from Flint, which gave Tech a one point lead. With 1:15 to play,
Josh Black was fouled but could only tie the game for WP by making one of two from the free throw line. Â After Oregon Tech turned the ball over on their next possession, Gaines grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled with 16 seconds on the clock. His free throw was off the mark however, and Schramm's game winning attempt at the buzzer fell off the rim.
The overtime period was just as hard fought, as the score was tied twice and the lead changed hands three times. Flint's fourth three pointer of the game made the score 80-78 in favor of OIT with 47 seconds to play, but
Josh Black canned a clutch three pointer of his own just seconds later that gave Warner Pacific the lead for good. WP's
Michael Hall came up with a big block on the game winning attempt from the Owls in the final seconds, and Gaines salted the game away with two free throws.
Schramm poured in 33 points for Oregon Tech on 14 of 25 shooting, including five treys. Flint added 18 points, while Kyle Waits contributed 14 points and six rebounds.
