Knights Finally Awarded Win Against Washington

Box Score FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 5th, 2025

Seattle, Wash.| The Warner Pacific Knights have officially been granted the win against the University of Washington in a game played way back on May 5th at Husky Ballpark.

The Knights went up to Seattle for the final game of the year and holy smokes did it not disappoint. The Knights got down early in the first inning as the Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead but the Knights fought back in the second inning scoring two runs of their own. The Knights followed the second inning up with two more runs in the third going up 4-2. The Knights then scored another in the fifth to max out their lead at 5-2. The Huskies to their credit started to fight back by scoring one run each in the fifth and the sixth inning bringing the score to 5-4 through six.

Things got interesting in the middle of the sixth inning when it was made known that the lights at Husky Ballpark weren't functioning properly. The umpires and coaches all got together and made it known that if the lights didn't work at the end of the sixth inning, we'd be putting the game on pause to see if the administration could remedy the situation. When the sixth inning concluded, the game stopped and everyone waited to see what would happen. About 45 minutes went by with only a few banks of lights turning on which left about 10 banks of lights still not lit. Finally, the coaches and umpires got together again and decided to call the game due to darkness.

All but two Knights got a hit in this game including a huge blast from Trent Lowe who went yard out to left field on his way to a three hit night. Cole Winston and Connor Hale each had two hits as well. Ayden Yaeger had himself a heck of a day pitching all six innings holding a solid division one offense to just four runs in which all were earned. Shawn Hunt also had a great day with one hit and had a great defensive play at second robbing Washington of a base hit.

The events that transpired were a little wild. The Knights found out fairly quickly after the game that they should've been awarded the win under NCAA rule 5-8 (b) and (c).

"(b) It shall be a regulation game if called by the umpire at any time after five innings have been completed, and the score shall be that of the last equal inning played, except that in the following circumstances the score of the game shall be the total number of runs that each team has scored."

"(c) It is a regulation game if it is called by the umpire for any cause that puts patrons or players in peril such as for darkness, inclement weather, a facility problem or crowd behavior, provided the conditions in 5-8-b have been met. If a game is delayed due to inclement weather, a facility problem, etc., a reasonable amount of time (not less than 30 minutes) must elapse before the game is called."

After conversations with Washington Athletic Department Administration, it was determined that they were trying to make the game considered as a "halted" situation which would mean the game would be basically canceled and would be treated as if it had never happened. After a lot of back and forth, the University of Washington went silent and the game stayed in a state of suspension.

After about a few weeks of Washington going radio silent and after a full month after the game was played, the Cascade Collegiate Conference Commissioner, Robert Cashell sent an email saying that the game is final and requested stats to be sent to Warner Pacific.

"I have to admit I was really disappointed in the way Washington handled this," Athletic Director Matt Gregg said. "I guess I expected more out of the administration there. Now a month later it is resolved and the result is as it should be. KNIGHTS WIN, KNIGHTS WIN!"
