Northwest Passes Test in Portland, Drops WPC 3-1

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Northwest University bounced back from an opening set loss to earn a key Cascade Conference victory over Warner Pacific tonight, 3-1 at C.C. Perry Gym.

The result moved the Eagles to 11-7 overall and one game ahead of the Knights in the CCC standing at 5-4. WP falls to 10-7 and 4-5.

Set one was a back and forth struggle, as the score was tied 15 times and the teams traded leads seven times. With the scored tied at 23-23, the Knights earned the win after a NU error and a big kill from Rylie Engelson.

Warner Pacific suffered a slow start in set two, falling behind 9-1 in the early going as NU's Arika Zwack fired over two aces and several more serves that were difficult to handle. The Knights rebounded thanks to four kills from Devan Belshe to close within 15-19, but could draw no closer and the Eagles claimed set two 25-19.

Set three saw nine tie scores, the last at 14-14. Northwest went on a 7-2 run at that point behind more tough serving, this time from Anna Thostensen. WP could not recover and NU won the set 25-18.

Northwest continued to serve well in set four, and turned a 8-8 tie into a 20-11 lead midway through the frame. The Knights tried to climb back into contention with a 7-4 run, but Breana Covey capped the set with a kill to give NU the set 25-17 and the important road win.
