PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific survived a close first set, then cruised to a 3-0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-16) win over Evergreen State tonight at C.C. Perry Gym.
It was senior night for the host Knights (3-13, 2-13 CCC), with Kim Mulka and Jacalyn Chew-Dorsey playing the final home game of their careers. The result prevented Evergreen State (0-15, 0-14) from putting a mark in the win column for the first time this season.
The Knights jumped out to a 10-3 lead early in set one, but the Geoducks fought back behind four service aces. The last ace came from Erin Mitchell, and gave Evergreen their first lead at 21-20. The Geoducks forged a 23-21 lead and looked to steal the frame, but back-to-back blocks by WP's Kristina Naff and Loren Hernandez and a kill from Carly Barker sent the Knights back in front. The teams traded points until the set became tied at 25-25, at which point Kaylin Elms swung for a pair of kills to give Warner Pacific the set 27-25.
Evergreen held a 4-1 lead in the opening moments of set two, but it was short lived. WP went on a 9-1 run at that point and did not look back. The Knights hit for a robust .419 percentage in the frame, spiking 13 kills versus just three errors. Hernandez registered five kills on her own and added a pair of service aces.
Set three featured five tie scores and two lead changes, and Warner Pacific held a slim 12-11 lead midway through the game. The Knights would close out the match behind three kills from Kim Mulka and win going away, 25-16.
The Knights attacked at their best percentage of the season (.319), hitting for 43 total kills versus just 13 errors. WP also fired over nine service aces, while Evergreen countered with 23 total kills and five aces.
Mulka and Barker led the Knights with 11 kills each. Chew-Dorsey closed out her home career with a match high 14 digs, while Kelsey Kurtz touched up 39 assists.
Jasmine Horton led all players with 15 kills for Evergreen State. Erin Mitchell had 21 assists and four service aces.
